About Us and our Community
Humber Avenue Community Allotments (HACA) is a vibrant allotment site comprising of 100 plots, dedicated to an inclusive and welcoming environment for individuals of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Our mission is to promote the physical, mental and social well being of the community through the many benefits of gardening.

Managed by HACA which is a community interest company, we have overseen the allotments on behalf of Worthing Borough Council since 2021. As a community interest company, any surplus funds are reinvested back directly into the community, supporting initiatives that make allotment gardening accessible and enjoyable for all.

We are committed to the ongoing improvements that benefit both plot holders and the wider community. Our vision is to support healthier, happier lives by creating a space that encourages physical activity, social connection, education and relaxation.

To support inclusivity, we have developed a range of accessible plots designed to accommodate individuals with both visible and invisible health conditions. These vary in size and layout to suit different needs. Some of these plots are rented to local charities, enabling their clients to experience the therapeutic benefits of gardening. One such example is West Sussex Mind, who maintain a community plot on site and have seen significant positive outcomes as a result of their involvement. A video and a short article from the National Allotment Society can be seen below which explains this in more detail. Humber Avenue allotments are the only allotment site in Worthing that offers a rental discount for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that our spaces remain inclusive and affordable.

Environmental sustainability is central to our vision. We actively promote biodiversity by preserving open spaces within our site for local wildlife. A plot holder with expertise in biodiversity attends regular committee meetings to help guide these efforts, to ensure that wildlife and cultivation coexist harmoniously.

In 2025, we introduced a new social hub, a multifunctional space available to all charities, plot holders and community groups. The hub serves as a venue for educational sessions, gardening tips and environmental stewardship.

Our on site shop which is run by WAGA is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 12pm. During these hours, the site gates are always open, and visitors are welcome to drop in and speak with members of our community. Membership fees apply for the use of the shop but we encourage anyone interested to come along and learn more about joining our growing community of allotmenteers.
The National Allotment Society
We recently upgraded a number of our allotment plots to include accessible plots which enable people with both visible and invisible disabilities to enjoy the benefits of gardening. The National Allotment Society recently published an article on our efforts which can be read below.
